Bathrooms occupy the least square footage of a home but they accumulate tons of clutter. Old containers, expired cosmetics and medications , and things that belong in other rooms are usual “clutter culprits”.
The desire to clean out your bathroom vanity drawers and linen closet is there but the motivation to actually do something is not. Hopefully, our challenge tips and tricks will help energize you and get you excited about having a peaceful and serene bathroom.
Before you get started, be sure to have a box/bin for items you will be donating, throwing away, and keeping.
Just like with the other areas, we are going to use my “PILLS” method of decluttering.
Just as a reminder…PILLS stands for:
P-Pull everything out
I-Inventory what you have (put likes with likes)
L-Let go of things with gratitude.
L-Label and Contain
S-Style
Pull everything out
Take out anything that does not belong in the bathroom that you can see up’s on first glance. Place those items in a bin and put them back where they belong. Clear all countertops.
Be sure to clean the bathroom counter after removing everything.
Since it is a weekday, work on one area at a time.
Use your counter as a workspace for the items in your vanity and linens closet.
Inventory
Once you pull out items, group like items together. Notice any duplicates. Begin to think about how you want to store the items you are keeping.
Let Go With Gratitude
Old cosmetics, expired meds, and excess décor should all be removed from the bathroom. How many towels and sheet sets do you actually use? Could some be donated as a blessing for someone else? Cosmetics that you bought but didn’t like…could those be donated to a friend?
Label and Contain
Small containers inside vanity drawers and shelves are an excellent way to keep things corralled. My preference for bathroom storage is clear containers. Transparency makes it easy for you to see what you have and what needs to be replenished. So often, we purchase duplicates because we do not know what we have. I love this set from Home Edit that is available from Wal-Mart the system is sturdy and stackable!
Two tiered storage baskets for under the sink are amazing!
If you have a medicine cabinet, please go through all of your medications and get rid of anything that is expired or that you no longer are taking. As a licensed Pharmacist, I must tell you—the bathroom is NOT the best place to store your medications. Temperature changes and moisture may affect the potency of different medications . Unless otherwise specified, most medications should be stored in a cool dry place. Dresser drawers or a kitchen cabinets away from the stove, sink, and any hot appliances are good places. (Just be sure to monitor this if you have children in the home.) You can also store medicine in a storage box, on a shelf, in a closet.
Style
A really simple way to style your bathroom is to incorporate natural elements like greenery. Trays are also an excellent way to add texture to your bathroom. Mason jars and trinket dishes can be stored on trays to do double of beauty and function as you can they can also house qtips, cotton balls, make up remove discs and other small items.
Up your game on the hand soap and lotion dispensers and VOILA. (You can even use these for shampoo and conditions and really be FANCY).
