The Christmas season is approaching, and with it comes the joy of decorating our homes. It is easy to get caught up in a buying frenzy, accumulating decorations and Amazon finds.
I am challenging myself to recognize, embrace, and honor my season of life, in planning my calendar and decorating my home this Christmas season.
This involves being mindful of my energy levels, finances, and family commitments.
It means offering myself grace.
Friend, I encourage you to offer yourself grace as well.
If you have the want to, time, energy, and resources to deck out every room of your home for the holidays, I say DO IT!!
If you need to scale things back this season…DO IT!
Either way, offer yourself enough grace to plan your decor and calendar in advance.
Here are few tips to help you on your peaceful holiday decorating journey:
Remember the reason for the season:
Don’t focus on the hustle and bustle. Jesus’ birth is the reason we celebrate Christmas. Taking time for spiritual reflection and gratitude will help us experience real joy this season.
Declutter First: (HEAVY ON THIS)
Before buying new decorations, assess what you already have. Donate or recycle items that no longer resonate with you. TAKE DOWN THE FALL DECOR AND PACK IT AWAY NEATLY IN A LABELED BIN BEFORE YOU PUT UP ONE PIECE OF CHRISTMAS DECOR!!! (Yes, I’m yelling….but only as your favorite Professional Organizer Friend) 🙂
Create a Theme:
Choose a decorating theme or color palette for the season. This will help you focus on specific items that fit your theme, preventing impulse purchases.
***Professional decorator tip: If you really want to get use of your holiday decor for multiple months, use a lot of neutrals. White, browns, metals, and greens make excellent winter decor after the Christmas season is over.
Buy with Intention:
When shopping for new decorations, be intentional. Ask yourself if each item truly enhances your holiday experience and fits your theme. Your favorite Instagram influencer promoting said product is NOT a good enough reason to purchase.
What gets put up must be taken down:
Let me say this for the people in the front and in the back….BABEEEEE whatever you put out has to be taken down and packed away!!! CONSIDER THIS….big time!
After all the celebrations are over, are you going to have the energy and motivation to take everything down?
By assessing your season of life, avoiding impulse purchases, and prioritizing meaningful decorations, you can create a warm and welcoming holiday atmosphere that truly reflects the spirit of the season.

I definitely find myself putting up less some years and only focusing on using the things I still love and getting rid of things that no longer serve me or that I don’t enjoy anymore for whatever reasons. I do LOVE the Christmas/Advent season and sometimes part of that is doing less decorating so I can enjoy the time more peacefully.

I would love to decorate
for these Chirstmas days,
but the cat will demonstrate
that there really ain’t no ways
that the tree will not be climbed,
nor Nativity undisturbed,
for Kitty is quite inclined
to go and firmly test what nerve
I have in facing sharpened claws
(yes, she has a scratching post),
and in obeying feline laws
set by cat that is my host
in the house that Kitty rules,
in tolerance of human fools.

Hey!! Andrew!!! Love your poems!

This year won’t be full of buying more but excitement to use what I have to bring joy. Can’t wait to work to get the tree up. Looking forward to holiday decoration shenanigans with you, Katina. You always make my home look amazing!

Wow, Katina! That sounds so well organised! I love the reason for the season, but all the rest leaves me a bit scrooge-like. I do it for the kids and grand-kids and I love the twinkly lights, carols and candles. And I love the holiday time of together with visiting family and friends. Your home must look amazing!!!!
Katina says
Yes the excitement at Christmas is the best!!!! Pacing ourselves is best!

wow, this is like a foreign language to me. I still have the same tree and decorations I bought 26 years ago – it has become our tradition to bring them out and spot all the old favourites. Each year I add one new baubel.

I love heirloom decor!!!
