Most people feel like being organized is a good idea. Where the trouble comes is in some of the beliefs people have about organizing. Almost every time I go to a client’s home for a “decluttering session”, I have to debunk a few myths about organizing.
Here are my top 3 Organizing Myths:
1. Organizing is time-consuming
The number one reason people don’t get started organizing is because they think it will take a long time. While it is true, it may take several hours or even days to organize an entire home in one session, tackling one area or room for fifteen to thirty minutes can make a huge difference.
One of my favorite activities is to set a timer, turn on music and work on one area.
2. Buying storage containers is the first step towards getting organized!
Noooooo! Declutter first!
Although purchasing those clear containers with latching tops may get you in the organizing mood, but they are a waste of time, space, and money. Once a space has been decluttered and organized THEN we can tell how the space will be best used. We also can actually measure the shelves where bins will go. How many times have you purchased a container without measuring only to find out it does not fit?
3. Organizing is too hard
I created an easy process called the “PILLS” method of decluttering. I created this method as a tool for completing in-home medication reviews with my patients. Since it was successful at bringing order to complex medication regimens, I just knew the method would carry over to other things.. and I was right. The “PILLS” method is easy to remember and complete!
PILLS stands for:
P-Pull everything out
I-Inventory what you have (put likes with likes)
L-Let go of things with gratitude.
L-Label and Contain
S-Style
Repeat these steps over and over!
One of the things I do the most for my clients is encourage them to keep going! Getting and staying organized is possible!!
