Hey Hey Hey! It’s DAY ONE of our 10 Day Declutter Challenge!!! Today’s room/area is the ENTRYWAY.
Entryways are the “welcome mat” for your home. A clean, organized, and aesthetically pleasing entryway says “we are so glad you came”. Unfortunately, this critical area of our home can become a dumping ground and eyesore if we are not diligent about attacking clutter.
For each area or room of the challenge. We are going to use my “PILLS” method of decluttering. I created this method as a tool for completing in-home medication reviews with my patients. Since it was successful at bringing order to complex medication regimens, I just knew the method would carry over to other things.. and I was right. The “PILLS” method is easy to remember and complete!
Just as a reminder…PILLS stands for:
P-Pull everything out
I-Inventory what you have (put likes with likes)
L-Let go of things with gratitude.
L-Label and Contain
S-Style
BUT before we start the PILLS method, we need to answer a question and do a little entryway dancing!
Question:
What is your vision for your entryway? What things do you need to remove, to achieve this vision? List what things will be in this room. And think of ways to house these better. Do you have furniture elsewhere that will would make this room more functional? If you are planning on purchasing any furniture for this area, measure your space before you buy anything!!! (USE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE FIRST!)
Dance:
Do the Electric Slide
This step is EASY PEASY! Simply play the Electric Slide song, get a bin or basket and gather items that do NOT belong in the entryway (cups, silverware, toys, etc). Then set your timer for five to ten minutes, (depending on how much stuff needs to be put away), and “slide” those items into their proper homes.
Now it’s time to take our…PILLS:
P-Pull everything out – Being able to see exactly what you own and want to store in your entryway will help clarify what systems you need to set up later. (Start thinking about what items you use daily in this space). If you still have things you don’t want to keep in the entryway….find them a home!
I-Inventory what you have (put likes with likes) Common items are: coats, bags, hats, scarfs, umbrellas, dog leashes, masks, hand sanitizer, mail and bills, etc.
L–Let go of things with gratitude.-Decreasing the amount of stuff you store in your entryway will make it easier to keep it organized. Place items into “keep” and “donate” piles. Only keep the items that bring you joy…those you use, love, and wear.
L-Label and Contain-Make a list of the items that will require storage so you can create a “home” for it. It may be necessary to have a bin or basket for each family member. The point is to have a place for each item you are planning on keeping in the entryway.
A few items you may want to include to help with this step are:
Hooks for jackets, dog leashes, purses, and keys.
Shoe storage
Bowl or basket for storing keys
Folder, basket, or Mail storage organizer for magazines and bills
Mail is a huge cause of clutter. IF you struggle with mail, get a portable file box with labeled sections. Portability will make it easy to stash when you have guests over. (However, even this file box will need to be cleaned out eventually so keep a shredder close by!)
S-Style -Once you’ve organized, you can elevate your space with some easy details. SHOP YOUR HOME before buying anything. A mirror, artwork, rug, or plant adds coziness and creates a welcoming environment.
(Before styling, please clean your space. Wipe/dust surfaces and sweep/vacuum.)
If you have a closet in your entryway, use the PILLS method for it as well!
YOU DID IT! DAY ONE..COMPLETE!
Remember, we are celebrating even small wins. So, if you were not able to complete all the steps for today’s challenge…that is perfectly fine. If you simply did the Electric Slide, I bet your entryway would look 2000% better. Just do what you can and celebrate small wins.
