Decluttering is all about evaluating, discarding with gratitude, and keeping what brings you joy.
-
Garbage
-
Broken and damaged items
-
Stuff we borrowed from someone else but did not return.
-
Things we no longer need, use, or like
-
Items that no longer make sense in our space.
Here are a few tools you will need to use in advance to set yourself up for success:
- Have donation boxes ready and decide where you would like to take them.
- Purchase large trash bags to discard items that are expired, worn, or cannot be donated.
- Gather a box or tote to place items you plan on keeping but they belong in a different space other than the one you are decorating.
- Keep a journal handy. Going through our stuff is not easy. Write down any feelings that come up as you are handling your items. When you start to get distracted, a journal is also a great place to brain dump so you can continue to make decluttering progress.
- Be sure to join the Seasonal Decor Chics Facebook group.. Going through this process with other people makes it more difficult to quit and easier to persevere!
- Set time aside on each day of the challenge to work on decluttering and getting organized.
- Be kind to YOU! Most clutter does not accumulate in a day so it may take a few cycles of decluttering to reach your goal! The point is to keep going!
- Get your favorite cleaning supplies out and put them in a bucket or container.
How it works:
Each day, participants will clean and organize the room/area of the day. There are two days dedicated to the kitchen and day ten is a “catch up” day to complete any unfinished tasks. An email with tips and a description of the activities of the day will be sent every day of the challenge.
There is no set time to spend. However, you should at least spend fifteen minutes per day completing decluttering tasks. Of course, the more you put into the process, the more you will get out. Any blog posts or videos shared during the challenge will be archived on the 10 Day Declutter Challenge Page.
We will be using the same method I use when I conduct a medication review with a patient.
I call it PILLS:
P-Pull everything out
I-Inventory what you have (put likes with likes)
L-Let go of things with gratitude.
L-Label and Contain
S-Style
