10 Day Declutter Challenge Day 2-KITCHEN

March 26, 2022 Katina Leave a Comment

Hey there!!! Welcome to day two ….THE KITCHEN!

It is so easy to get overwhelmed when trying to declutter your kitchen…this is why we will be devoting two days to kitchen organization. (I recommend doing the kitchen cabinets and counters one day and the pantry on the next.)

Before starting, it’s essential to set reasonable expectations and choose just one section of your kitchen to work with at a time. This will allow you to make good progress without making a huge mess and running out of time.

Think about what you hope to get out of the decluttering process. What are your “pain points”? Do you need more space on your kitchen counter? Do you struggle to find what you are looking for while cooking? Are your utensils a mangled mess?

Just like with the entryway tasks, we will use the “PILLS” method.

P-Pull everything out-taking all of the items out of each cabinet or shelf allows you to see what you actually have.  Clear off kitchen counters. Don’t be surprised if you find quite a few duplicates!  Be sure to clean empty the cabinets or shelves.

I-Inventory what you have (put likes with likes)

L-Let go of things with gratitude. Rarely used appliances and gadgets, broken items, glassware and dishes you don’t use or like are all excellent items to trash or donate. Be sure to have plenty of trash bags as well as a donation bin/basket. Pluh-ease go through your Tupperware!!! Only keep items that have matching tops AND you use!

Be sure to dejunk your junk drawer and only put the necessary items back in the drawer using a drawer organizer or several small containers.

The area under your sink can easily become a black hole. Because things are so cluttered, there are often duplicate cleaning supplies and tons of half-empty containers. Maximize the space under your sink with a lazy susan or two-tiered under sink storage system. I absolutely LOVE the lazy susan and clear containers I used under my kitchen sink.  See them HERE.

L-Label and Contain-This is the most time-consuming step.  Consider how you use things when putting things back.

Put your pots and pans together, and close to the stove. Cutting boards, knives, and prep gadgets should go together, close to the counter. Store spices together, near oils and vinegars.

Make meal prep even simpler by storing supplies and ingredients together ie (coffee/smoothie station, baking zone, and kids lunch supplies)

“One of the most life-changing things you can do when organizing your kitchen is to make sure all of your essentials are front and center…Anything you use often– like spices, paper towels, and sponges– should be right out in the open where you can access them conveniently.” Andre Kazimierski, CEO, Improovy.

S-Style-An easy way to “style” your kitchen is with a tray, Trays help to create a zone or a “house” for things and stop the  “all over the place look” our kitchen counters can take on.  Trays can also add color contrast, warmth, and texture. (Check my easy spring tray styling video HERE)

Okkkk, I know…today’s tasks are “doing the most”.  But, since we have the weekend, take your time and do what you can!
