The Working Mama Paradox

August 14, 2013 Katina 6 Comments

My daughter’s field hockey team practice was cancelled yesterday due to rain.  Is it bad that I was secretly happy that I did not have to bark out orders to get all of the equipment packed up and drive all the way across town?

Wanna know something else?  I AM NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO SCHOOL STARTING! Boom!

Yep, I have continued my yearly denial techniques:  no shopping on the tax-free weekend (there are NO good sales that weekend anyway) and waiting until the last-minute to purchase school supplies.

Perhaps I am not looking forward to school because we did not have a restful summer filled with “just hanging by the pool” and lazy days of nothing to do. Since I have to be at work at 8am, we still get up early just like during the school year so I can get the girls to summer camp before work.

Although summer offers a reprieve from homework and extracurricular activities, this mama is not feeling refreshed and ready to begin a new school year.

Just thinking about homework and the hurry, scurry schedule gives me a rash.

Totally not trying to be a Debbie Downer–just keeping it real.

Ladies, kids or not….are you rested and full of renewed energy?  Are you happy?

Do you feel like you can efficiently wear all of the hats your life demands you to put on AND look fresh and fashionable?

I found an interesting article and graphic on www.greatbusinessschools.org called: A Woman’s Paradox: The unique challenges facing women who “want it all”.

With studies to back up their claims, the article states: “Despite progress toward “having it all,” research shows that American women are less satisfied and burn out more quickly. And today’s economic realities mean fewer options when it comes to choosing between work and home.”

WOW…

Check it out and let me know your thoughts in the comments section! (Click on the graphic see a larger view.)

Interesting. I believe Americans generally are stressed because we want all of the luxuries of life. Big houses, nice cars, international vacations, name brand everything, and all the latest and greatest new gadgets. We overextend ourselves with credit, therefore we HAVE to work and we HAVE to continue to make more money. God wants us blessed, but being blessed does not mean drowning in debt. The borrower is slave to the lender. Imagine how many life changes could be made, if ALL those bills didn’t have to be paid. Yes, we would still have to run around taking kids here and there and doing mama stuff, but without the added financial stress. Being a mom is the hardest and most rewarding job we can have. There is no corporate ladder to climb because we’re already at the top. 🙂 My view on work changed when I was laid off from my job and was out of work for 5 months. My daughter and husband both said I had completely changed and was a much nicer person when I didn’t work, even though we had less income. They also loved having me home. Now, I only work part-time and love it. #eyeopeningexperience #offmysoapboxnow

I’m guilty of not taking that time to rest. If I’m not working, I’m taking care of the kids. And then there’s housework. And, and, and… a never ending to do list.

Most women burn out by 30 and stop climbing the corporate ladder? I’m turning 30 in October…and I can kind of relate. Climbing the ladder is overwhelming, on top of taking care of the rest of my life. But I’ll challenge myself not to stop. To keep going, keep growing. Somehow – I have to hope – it will work out.
