It is New Year’s Eve and just like most people, I have been contemplating what I would like to do differently in the New Year. Of course drink more water, exercise, limit my sugar intake, be punctual, and don’t overbook my schedule are all on deck. However, I am feeling an inner stirring to do more than just what is “usual” for the beginning of a New Year.
How many people actually think about their death for the New Year?
I know it sounds morbid and a total buzz kill but I really think clarity can be gained in thinking about our own death.
When we realize the brevity of life, we do things differently. The things that used to bother us don’t anymore. With all of the precious children and teachers who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the handsome eleven year old boy who was killed while getting on the school bus not even a mile from my house last week, I have been pondering the brevity of life.
The bible has quite a bit to say about the brevity of life.
Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
Wow, our lives are like mist? Some texts say vapor instead of mist. Either way, mist or vapor are fleeting and vanish quickly.
As much as we “control freak mamas” like to manage our lives, time and its events are at the disposal of God. Our thoughts may be filled with plans and dreams for ourselves, or our families but Providence (God –the power sustaining and guiding human destiny) often throws our plans into confusion.
Psalm 39:6-7 really puts things into perspective and gives us direction for the New Year:
We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. (Psalm 39:4-7(NLT)
Tim McGraw sang a really powerful song in 2006 entitled Live Like You Were Dying. Divas, I think we should live 2013 like we are dying ‘cause in reality, we are. With each passing day we are closer to death than the one before. I would type the lyrics but it just won’t do it justice. Listen to it here. (Even if you know the song like the back of your hand, still take a moment to listen. It will make you think!)
Thank you so much for the many blessings of 2012. Lord please strengthen me to love deeper, speak sweeter and give me the power to offer forgiveness I have been denying. As 2013 ushers in and the desire to do more and achieve more weighs over me, help me to always to depend on YOUR will and put my hope in YOU. Please keep me mindful of the brevity of this life that I may I live like I am dying.
Happy 2013! Thank you all so much for reading my posts and encouraging me!
