It’s Day 6 of the “31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes Challenge”. I have been learning so much about myself through this challenge. God is speaking to me, and I have gleaned a valuable lesson: Committing to something is easy. Honoring the commitment and following through are the hard parts.
Today’s word is notice.
My friend continued to initiate silly selfies after our fitness classes despite her inability to smile. Although she was smiling brightly on the inside, Bell’s Palsy kept her from smiling on the outside. Bell’s Palsy is a condition causing the muscles on one side of your face to become weak or paralyzed. Although not painful, people with Bell’s Palsy usually experience facial droop and have difficulty closing the eye on the affected side of their face.
Bell’s Palsy could not keep a good woman down. My friend did not miss one event, shy away from the camera, grumble, or shrink back. One day, she said something so profound it shook me up a little. “I will never take my smile for granted again. Sometimes we don’t notice a blessing until we don’t have it anymore”.
So true. I don’t notice the blessing of all the nights I was able to sleep without my allergies acting up until the one or two nights my allergies kept me from sleeping. If I am not careful, all the incredible things going well in my life can be overshadowed by the few things not meeting my expectations.
Today, I am choosing to notice what is going well!
What is going well in your life right now?
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things….and the God of peace will be with you. (Phillippians 4:8-9b)
