It’s da weekend baby! It is also day twelve of the thirty-one days of Five Minute Free Writes writing challenge. Today’s word prompt is First.
Being first in the DMV line when it is time to renew your license has “winning” all over it. First is the best in our society. No one even remembers who comes in second.
Every one wants to be first until it’s time to apologize. We weren’t raised by wolves, so if we do something crappy…being first to say “I’m sorry” is ok. But when we really don’t understand what the big deal is because we don’t feel like we did anything…being first is lame and feels like losing.
When apologies are on the table, we usually want someone else to take the lead. God is calling me to step into leadership in my relationships. Great leaders are honest, integral, and accountable. They take responsibility and know it is not about right or wrong but about valuing other people.
What better way to show someone they matter than by apologizing first?
Ok God. I hear you.
-Lead by owing my stuff without defending, justifying, or denying.
-Offer the gift of a specific and sincere apology first.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another [your false steps, your offenses], and pray for one another, that you may be healed and restored. James 5:16a
