This past Sunday, as I talked on the phone with my mother, I began to describe the “volunteer remorse” I was feeling. At least four months ago, I agreed to lead the “warm up” for participants of the local Muscular Dystrophy Association’s fundraising walk. The event planner and I did not reconnect again until the week of the walk. Since I had not heard from her, I forgot all about it. Hey! Don’t judge me. I turned forty-six yesterday. I am totally on a “out-of-sight-out-of-mind” status now. Anywho, since I gave her my word and rearranged some of my birthday festivities so I could be there.”
I adjusted my schedule but I wasn’t happy about it. Actually, as the day moved closer, I dreaded it. From my experience, when event planners ask for an instructor to come and lead a group of people, (who are not regular ZUMBA participants), participation is low. It turns into a performance (by the instructor) instead of a group activity.
That was SOOO NOT the case yesterday. Almost everyone participated…even the guys! So many smiling faces just happy to be dancing for a moment.
Some awesome families shared their humbling yet inspiring stories and I was drawn to introduce myself to this beautiful young woman dashing around in her motorized wheelchair. She was asked to speak about her journey to the group and y’all…she is stunning.
Her name is Taylor Torrez. Taylor was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type III and has not been able to walk since she was three years old. While speaking, Taylor described constantly struggling to find affordable clothing with an appropriate fit. Soooo, she CREATED an affordable, adaptable clothing line! YES QUEEN! Her clothing line is called “The Reasons Why”.
Taylor’s line has t-shirts, hats, car decals and all kinds of cool gear! Check her out on Instagram @thereasonswhy18 and on Facebook
The MDA walk and meeting Taylor were major highlights from my weekend of birthday festivities. The MDA’s WHY is to find a cure for muscular dystrophy and support people and families affected by the disease. Taylor’s WHY is to help people with disabilities stay fly with affordable clothing with an adaptive fit.
While leading a simple warm-up, I watched the faces of those I led and had an epiphany:
I love bringing women together to have fun and grow in the Lord. That is my WHY for leading Bible study, egroups, writing, dancing, camping, and life.
Come on in 46…
Today’s post is part of a 31 day writing challenge I am participating in with my friends over at Five Minute Friday. Instead of just writing for five minutes on Fridays, participants are challenged to write for five minutes every day for 31 days. Five minutes doesn’t sound like long but consistency will be the key! Today’s post took a little longer than five minutes but I am going to give this challenge my all!
Pray my strength!
