I am participating in a writing challenge sponsored by Five Minute Friday. For thirty-one days, Christian writers from all over the world are gathering to write for at least five minutes on a one-word prompt. Five minutes of writing doesn’t sound like a big deal but these last nine days have shown me: being consistent for even five minutes every day is a HUGE deal.
Today’s word prompt is: JOIN.
I bargained with myself and God as I sat at the stoplight to turn into my daughter’s school yesterday. It was my third time at that stoplight within less than an hour. The urge to write “help me” on my window was strong. Sad, disappointed, deflated, and exhausted are all excellent adjectives to describe my feelings.
Yesterday was “one of those days”. It was a traffic, work issues, and a forgotten volleyball bag so Mama had to go all the way back home and get it kind of day. Admittedly, it was “first world problems” and annoyances surely considered minuscule in comparison to real issues. Yet, little things when left unchecked grow into big problems.
“Catch the foxes for us, The little foxes that spoil and ruin the vineyards [of love],
While our vineyards are in blossom.” Song of Solomon 2:15 AMP
“Out of the blue” (all God), a beautiful woman I met at She Speaks last summer sent me a message asking me when I would be available to talk about resting. Y’all God really has a sense of humor. Five seconds earlier, I was seriously contemplating joining the circus and this woman was asking me about rest?
To give some context, Dawn and I had a special connection while at She Speaks and have followed each other closely on social media. She shared a post on Instagram last weekend about honoring the Sabbath and resting.
She also gave some tips to help Mama’s unplug. Tip number seven knocked me off my feet: “Stop making excuses about why you can’t take a break, how everyone needs you, how no one can do it right but you, how it won’t get done if you don’t do it. WE ARE NOT THE SOURCE. We are a resource and we must go to the Source to get re-sourced.” WOW
I commented and asked “So you just let stuff go undone?”
Her response was–YES.
I rolled my eyes and kept pushing. Rest? “Ain’t nobody got time for that” (In my best Sweet Brown voice).
Her text and call yesterday were a blessing. (Thank you Dawn for saving me from a circus career). We had a God-ordained, Holy Spirit-filled conversation about rest and the practice of the Sabbath. After talking with her, I realized…I have been on all cylinders seven days every week. I have not been resting or honoring the Sabbath. We discussed some strategies like: physically putting rest on my schedule and preparing for the Sabbath in advance.
God helped me see rest and getting recharged with Him is how I handle the “little foxes that spoil and ruin”.
I am rearranging my schedule this week for some rest and quiet time with God. Wanna join me?
