Today is day twenty-four of the Five Minute Free Writes Writing Challenge! God has really been dealing with me through these posts. Today’s word is Different.
There are a few major things in my life that have not turned out the way I thought they would have. I’ve prayed, wished, cried, pouted, zoned-out, yelled, and bargained with God in an effort to make things different.
It’s like going through the drive though and they get your order wrong and you decide to just eat what they gave you. You’re thankful for nourishment, it is just not what you had a taste for.
You wanted something different.
Sometimes, different can be good. I ordered Thousand Island dressing at a restaurant recently but they didn’t have it. The waiter said they had Russian dressing instead. I decided to try it. Surprisingly, I really liked the Russian dressing. It was a different texture from Thousand Island and it had a little spicy kick. In the words of Tabitha Brown: Honey, very good!
What about when you try different and you don’t like it? Or when you really attempt to “deal with it” and dealing with it makes you feel sick on your stomach and sad?
Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us:
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (ESV)
I had to read the verses in various translations because I was not getting it. I had already prayed about different.
Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours]. (AMP)
Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have. And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds. (Easy to Read Version)
I gathered this to mean:
When I feel agitated and impatient about things not being different, continue to pray. Tell God all about it and be thankful for what He has already done. Gratitude will summon contentment until God brings about change.
True contentment is Gorilla-glued to trusting God.
And because my Pastor-friend Wanda Applewhite asked a question a few months ago that left me mind blown, I will leave this right here:
“Do we trust God enough to release what is precious to us (what we want more than life) to God and believe that God will manage it and either give it back or make us powerful and purposeful without it?”
